Congressman Chip Roy has highlighted the urgency of passing the Save America Act to ensure the security of federal elections in the United States. He pointed out a significant issue in New Jersey, a ‘software glitch’ led to 6,600 non-citizens being registered to vote, with hundreds reportedly casting votes. Roy emphasized the necessity of voter ID, a measure supported by 80% of Americans, urging the Senate to pass the bill.
Federal authorities have recently made several arrests in connection with election-related offenses involving non-citizens. These developments clash with Democratic claims that such incidents of voting by non-citizens are extremely rare or even non-existent. The arrests are part of an ongoing partisan debate over the SAVE Act, which aims to require proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. Critics, primarily Democrats, argue that this measure could make voting more difficult for eligible Americans.
“Let me be perfectly clear: This is a non-issue. Noncitizens do not vote in U.S. elections,” stated Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., in 2025, opposing the bill.
Recently, three non-citizens faced charges in Philadelphia County, partially represented by Scanlon. In a related case, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported the arrest of individuals such as Joshua Kofi Edzie from Ghana for voting-related charges. Similar allegations include Sade Guppy from Trinidad and Tobago, cited for illegal voting in the 2022 midterms, and Haitian immigrant Cliff Sanon, accused of fraudulent voter registration prior to the 2026 Pennsylvania primaries.
The DHS also flagged Mahady Sacko, a Mauritanian immigrant accused of voting in seven federal elections since 2008. Fox News Digital reached out to Scanlon for her input. Additionally, on a broader scale, Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the indictment of 10 foreign nationals for voter fraud in Minnesota, including instances during its August primary election. Alleged perpetrators are reportedly from multiple countries, such as Brazil, Ghana, and Liberia.
Senator Alex Padilla, D-Calif., has consistently referred to non-citizen voting as extremely rare while criticizing the SAVE Act as anti-voter. In response to the recent wave of arrests, he stated that though it’s illegal, these instances remain uncommon after the DOJ investigated millions out of 174 million registered voters. Padilla suggested the DOJ focus more on eliminating voter-registration processing delays.
While some Democrats, like Rep. Joe Morelle, D-N.Y., label the SAVE Act as dangerous, Rep. James Walkinshaw of Virginia expressed skepticism about frequent non-citizen voting during a segment on MSNOW.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill recently admitted that around 400 non-citizens had voted in the state. A DHS spokesperson reiterated their ongoing effort to identify and investigate voter fraud actively.
The White House representative, Lauren Bis, when commenting to Fox News Digital, stressed that non-citizens registering and voting in elections remains an ongoing issue, despite media and political denials spanning decades.
