New Superintendent Aims to Lead Oak Park Elementary with a Focus on Equity

As the new academic year approaches, Terri Bresnahan has been busy preparing for the return of students. She is ensuring that teachers, students, and buildings are well-prepared for the first day of school on August 26. Bresnahan began her 31st year in public education as the superintendent at Oak Park Elementary School District 97, which includes eight elementary schools, Brooks Middle School, and Julian Middle School. Her four-year contract was approved in February and commenced on July 1.

Bresnahan arrives from Berkeley School District 87, where she served as superintendent for 11 years. She emphasizes pursuing equity in Oak Park, a community she describes as committed to providing opportunities and access to resources for all students. She stated, “Being in a community like Oak Park where they have community resources, but are very committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to achieve and have access to those resources, I think it’s really important.”

Cheree Moore, the School Board President, expressed confidence in Bresnahan’s abilities. “Dr. Bresnahan brings deep experience leading diverse school communities with integrity and care, along with a long-standing commitment to equity and student success,” Moore said. “The board is confident she is the right person to lead District 97 forward.”

Bresnahan feels drawn to Oak Park’s community values, which align with her professional goals. She remarked, “It’s really an honor and a privilege to serve in this district.” Her focus includes strengthening school culture through initiatives like “responsive classrooms,” aimed at fostering positive classroom management.

Growing up with a single mother who worked multiple jobs, Bresnahan understands the importance of access to educational resources. Her experience with school programs, such as free lunch, inspired her to pursue a career in education. “Having that experience helped me choose a career where I could pay that back to other generations and open doors for other kids,” she explained.

Settling into her new role, Bresnahan plans to evaluate the district’s needs and connect with the community. “My hope is that people get connected with me so they can feel like they know me, not just as a superintendent, but as a person that’s really here and is committed to serving all students in this community,” Bresnahan stated.

Moore reiterated community expectations for leadership that is present and committed. “Dr. Bresnahan brings the experience to step into this role ready to listen, build relationships, and build on the strong work already underway across District 97.”
