The New York Yankees pulled off a thrilling comeback, defeating the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in an extended game at Yankee Stadium, which concluded after midnight. The game was initially delayed by heavy rain and thunderstorms for nearly two hours.
Ben Rice kept the game alive for the Yankees by hitting a clutch single off the right-field wall with two outs in the ninth inning, tying the score. In the 10th inning, Ryan McMahon’s sacrifice fly brought the Yankees the game-winning run, ending the Braves’ eight-game winning streak.
Yankees pitcher Max Fried also impressed in his first game against his former team. Fried, who now plays for the Yankees after signing a substantial $218 million contract for eight years, managed to pitch 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
Tyler Mahle matched Fried’s performance with six shutout innings in his debut for Atlanta. Despite the Yankees’ struggles in extra-inning games this season, they improved their record to 2-8 in such games.
The Yankees managed to even the score thanks to some critical plays. In the eighth inning, Austin Riley hit a home run, and Matt Olson added another in the ninth to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead.
With the Yankees down to their final out, Austin Wells doubled home a run against Atlanta’s All-Star closer Raisel Iglesias. Amed Rosario then walked, setting up Ben Rice’s significant hit. An unfortunate throwing error by Iglesias allowed rookie George Lombard Jr. to reach third, creating the opportunity for McMahon’s decisive sacrifice fly.
On the defensive side, David Bednar pitched a scoreless 10th inning, aided by a remarkable throw by George Lombard and Luis García Jr.’s catch.
Looking ahead, a notable pitching matchup is set for Saturday between Atlanta’s Chris Sale and New York’s Gerrit Cole. Sale has a record of 12-6 with a 2.08 ERA this season, while Cole stands at 5-5 with a 3.42 ERA. Both pitchers are Cy Young Award winners, making this an anticipated game on Old Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium.
