NFL Quarterback Injury Concerns Persist Despite Rule Changes

10 hours ago 0

In 1979, Jack Lambert, a Hall of Fame linebacker, commented on the NFL’s new rules on roughing the passer by joking, “put dresses on all of them.” Decades later, the NFL has introduced more regulations aimed at protecting quarterbacks. Despite these efforts, injuries remain a significant issue for players in this critical position.

By Week 4 of the current season, six starting quarterbacks have suffered injuries. This persistent issue raises questions about the effectiveness of rule changes in preventing injuries. Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts believes that increasing rule changes won’t solve the problem. Speaking to OutKick, Fouts emphasized the inherent violence of the game, noting the superior athleticism of defenders.

“As far as today and the quarterbacks and getting hurt, it’s a violent, violent game,” Fouts stated. “Defenders are very, very good. They are more athletic than offensive linemen.”

The NFL has evolved, and athletes are now bigger, stronger, and faster. The league can attempt to safeguard quarterbacks through regulations, but the game’s nature still leads to injuries.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart are recent examples of starters dealing with injuries. Dart faces a prolonged absence after undergoing meniscus surgery, while other quarterbacks have returned or are expected to resume play this season. Though backup quarterbacks have guided winning games for teams like the Seahawks, Commanders, Bears, Giants, and Vikings, offensive performance often declines without the starters.

Fouts argues that protecting quarterbacks goes beyond rule changes. “It basically comes down to protecting the quarterback, and not by rules, but by playing better up front,” he remarked during a “Miller Night Football” discussion.

Despite common injuries, teams must rely on their offensive lines to protect quarterbacks, especially backups. Any reliance on a third-string quarterback can quickly derail a team’s season.

Dan Fouts knows well the challenges faced by quarterbacks. He played 15 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, after being drafted from Oregon. His illustrious career led to his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
