The NFL community was taken aback on Monday with the revelation that Chris Johnson, one of the few NFL players to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, is battling ALS. Ryan Fitzpatrick, who spent a season with Johnson at Tennessee Titans, shared a poignant connection with Johnson despite their limited time together.
Fitzpatrick reminisced about their brief camaraderie, saying, “He was a superb teammate during the year we played together, and his talent on the field was unmatched. We texted about a year ago, and reflecting back on our messages, I am reminded of the 100th touchdown pass I threw in the NFL, which was to CJ2K. He signed the football for me, marking it with ‘To my cool white boy. Congrats on number 100.’ That gesture from him has always held a special place for me.”
Regarding Johnson’s health, Fitzpatrick expressed empathy: “ALS is incredibly hard to endure, both for Chris and his loved ones. The thought of one’s mental faculties being intact while the body begins to deteriorate is truly challenging. Our thoughts, love, and support go to him, his wife, and his family.”
In a social media post, Johnson highlighted research indicating a link between repetitive head trauma and ALS. Studies have shown that NFL players are four times more likely to develop ALS compared to the general population.
Fitzpatrick, reflecting on his career, stated, “Even with the increasing awareness of risks associated with football, I would choose to play again. Football has been instrumental in shaping my life. I encourage my children who are interested in it to pursue it as well.” He acknowledged the realities of aging: “At 43, life presents more challenges. The loss of my mom five years ago underscored this. Witnessing a close friend from high school battle ALS firsthand, and seeing how it affects everyone around him, is tough. As age progresses, life presents hurdles to tackle.”
ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, has no known cure. It progressively disconnects the brain from the muscles. Those affected gradually lose abilities such as walking, talking, eating, and even breathing, according to the ALS Association.
Chris Johnson’s NFL tenure spanned from 2008 to 2017, with stints at the Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals.
