Faldo Questions DeChambeau’s Course Strategy
Nick Faldo, a six-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Famer, recently expressed criticism of Bryson DeChambeau’s approach to golf. Faldo, now 68 years old, commented on DeChambeau’s performance ahead of The Open at Royal Birkdale. According to Faldo, the LIV Golf star lacks a strategy on the course.
“That’s a whole part of the story, how they’re superstars at LIV then come over and can’t do it. So that’s all another story. Then they go back to be superstars. He has — I’d say it to his face — he has zero clue of strategy,” Faldo told Sky Sports.
DeChambeau’s Tactical Errors Highlighted
Faldo referred to DeChambeau’s comments from a year ago where the golfer mentioned his intention to “attack the links.” Faldo stressed that links courses, known for their complex layouts, require a nuanced approach. He pointed out that successful navigation involves careful planning rather than aggressive tactics.
“He said it last year I think on TV: ‘I’m going to go out and attack the links.’ Well, I’ve never attacked a links. You thread it, don’t you? You feed it down the fairway,” Faldo said.
Faldo emphasized the importance of precision, saying, “You don’t think, ‘I’ll just bomb it down there, can’t see where I’m going, it’s 20 yards wide.’ Oh yeah, good luck.”
Challenges in Recent Major Tournaments
DeChambeau has struggled in major tournaments this season, failing to make the cut at The Masters, The U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. Despite this, he qualified for this year’s Open Championship following a top 10 finish last year.
To counter Faldo’s critique, DeChambeau needs to showcase significant improvement in the initial rounds of The Open to make the cut. He also aims for a compelling performance at the final major of the year, seeking a significant payday amid reports of a $500 million deal once his LIV Golf contract concludes.
