Nicolas Cage is facing damage to his Malibu beachfront home due to severe coastal erosion. The driveway in front of his oceanfront property collapsed, forming a substantial sinkhole. This incident followed several days of rough surf linked to Hurricane Marie in the Pacific Ocean, which generated large waves and high tides.
A video captured at the scene shows a 30 by 30-foot hole in front of Cage’s home, revealing waves and the beams supporting the structure underneath. Debris from the driveway, including broken glass pieces from fences and concrete, can be observed within the sinkhole. Orange cones are placed around its perimeter as a precautionary measure.
The City of Malibu issued a statement on the situation via social media, noting their late-night response to the driveway collapse and an accompanying gas leak. The release mentioned that both the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department arrived at the scene to close the private road and identify the gas leak.
Malibu’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company are evaluating the safety concerns affecting the area. Currently, they have prohibited entry to five homes in the vicinity. The city is also closely monitoring other regions prone to coastal erosion, especially those near the Pacific Coast Highway in the Palisades Fire burn area and Westward Beach.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, no evacuations have been ordered. The city is proactively preparing for potential storms, heavy rain, mudslides, and coastal erosion associated with the ongoing El Niño conditions affecting Southern California’s coast.
Nicolas Cage bought the 4,000-square-foot home, featuring a rooftop deck and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, in 2024 for $10.5 million. Thankfully, Cage was not present when the driveway collapsed, and no injuries have been reported.
Cage, famous for roles in films such as “Moonlight,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” and “Face/Off,” has spoken about his approach to acting in the past. In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Cage explained his preference for trying different forms in his work, noting that independent films offer the freedom to explore such creative avenues.
