Nithya Raman’s Challenges and Aspirations in Los Angeles Politics

Nithya Raman faced a telling moment during a debate with Mayor Karen Bass. When asked what she needed to improve as a politician, she admitted, “In order to ensure your ideas aren’t stopped, you need to invite people in before presenting them.” This candid self-assessment comes as she hopes to become the next mayor of Los Angeles.

An alum of Harvard and MIT, Raman is recognized for her intelligence and significant legislative achievements on the City Council. She played a pivotal role in passing the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance in 2021. She also led the charge to update the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, reducing maximum allowable rent increases.

Despite these accomplishments, Raman scores poorly in collaboration and coalition-building. “Not a natural-born politician,” Rick Cole noted, emphasizing her greater inclination toward governance than politicking. Yet, he highlighted her potential, noting her quick learning curve.

Surprise Mayoral Announcement

Raman entered the mayoral race just before the filing deadline, weeks after endorsing Bass. She acknowledged causing friction, stating, “Frustrated by the city’s direction, I couldn’t wait four more years to change course.” Her campaign highlighted her legislative successes, including significant protections for renters and measures to aid immigrants and the homeless.

Though backed by the Democratic Socialists of America in the past, Raman didn’t seek their support until post-announcement. Leslie Chang, co-chair of DSA’s L.A. chapter, noted it was atypical for their collective approach. The DSA recommended Raman to members, despite not officially endorsing her.

Breaking the Mold

Raman finds herself in a tight race for second place, with no endorsements from sitting council members. While praised for working independently, critics point to her lack of alliances as a candidate.

Her platform differentiates from others, particularly Bass, as Raman critiques programs like Inside Safe for homelessness due to costs. She advocates a data-driven approach for persistent issues like potholes and streetlights. On Hollywood jobs, she promises reforms to attract industries back to the city.

Policy Shifts and Challenges

Raman’s stances have shifted over time, such as her initial call to defund the police versus subsequent budget approvals that support the LAPD. Her position on Measure ULA stirred debate, highlighting her willingness to adapt when facing obstacles.

Critics like Melina Abdullah from Black Lives Matter Los Angeles caution that her positions seem inconsistent, questioning her reliability. Yet, others, such as Mike Bonin, argue her adaptability signifies thoughtful political stewardship.
