A powerful nor’easter struck the Eastern Seaboard on Saturday, bringing flooding, power outages, and major travel disruptions. Heavy rain and strong winds impacted coastal areas, affecting millions of residents. Coastal flood warnings remain in effect, with predictions of additional rain, high tides, and damaging winds extending into Monday.
Persistent Storm Conditions
The storm has resulted in evacuations, submerged roads, and power outages for tens of thousands. Forecasts suggest the slow-moving system will linger near New Jersey’s coast, extending threats of flooding, erosion, and travel delays.
Understanding Nor’easters
The National Weather Service describes a nor’easter as a storm affecting the East Coast of North America, where winds typically come from the northeast. These storms are strongest from September to April, often bringing heavy rain or snow, gale-force winds, and coastal flooding.
The last significant nor’easter occurred this past February, delivering record snowfall in the Northeast, including nearly 38 inches in Rhode Island.
Growing Flood Threats
Coastal flooding became an immediate concern on Saturday due to high tides and strong onshore winds. Roads around the Jersey Shore and vulnerable communities near New York City were inundated, trapping vehicles and flooding low-lying areas. In Edgewater, New Jersey, emergency crews evacuated a waterside hotel when the Hudson River’s floodwaters entered the premises.
Additional floods were reported in regions like Point Pleasant and Belmar, with New Jersey officials advising residents in some areas to evacuate voluntarily. Closed bridges and limited access in places like North Wildwood compounded the situation.
Elli Hodge of Norfolk, Virginia, noted that the nor’easter caused significant localized flooding, stranding vehicles and forcing them onto sidewalks.
In Ocean City, Maryland, heavy surf led to beach erosion and flooding, as reported by the Associated Press.
Power Outages Affect Tens of Thousands
Strong winds presented hazards across a broad area, with gusts reaching over 50 miles per hour in multiple spots, including a 62-mph recording in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Meteorologists warned of falling trees and downed power lines due to saturated ground and strong winds.
More than 91,000 customers were without electricity on Saturday afternoon across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Utilities warned of possible delays in restoring power with ongoing high winds.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the likelihood of prolonged outages, stating winds exceeding 60 mph could prevent quick power restoration in affected areas.
Travel Disruptions Widespread
The storm significantly disrupted air travel, primarily in New England. Boston Logan International Airport faced over 250 cancellations, affecting about a quarter of its scheduled flights. Smaller airports in Massachusetts experienced even higher cancellation rates.
New York area airports reported numerous delays, with the potential for further ground stops if winds intensified. Earlier in the storm, LaGuardia Airport encountered notable delays as airlines adapted to changing weather conditions.
Besides air travel, Amtrak canceled several rail routes due to weather and downed wires. Alternate bus services were organized to maintain limited connectivity across the region.
Weather Forecast
Forecasts indicate an additional two to six inches of rain across the Northeast, with the highest expected totals in eastern Long Island, coastal Massachusetts, and Cape Cod. Rapid rainfall rates could increase risks of localized flooding.
Coastal flood warnings remain active through Sunday evening for parts of northeastern New Jersey, southeastern New York, and the Massachusetts coast. High-tide cycles are predicted to cause repeated coastal inundation.
Long Island faces particular risk, with waves estimated at 7 to 10 feet along its southern shores, potentially causing beach erosion and more flooding. New York City officials warned of heavy rain expected Saturday night, urging residents to stay away from beaches and water areas.
