North Carolina’s football general manager, Michael Lombardi, is on paid administrative leave. The school announced this decision in a statement on Monday, shortly before the Tar Heels start preseason camp. No specific reasons were given for the leave. The school mentioned that employees and athletes cannot discuss the situation as this is the standard approach for personnel matters.
Lombardi was hired in December 2024, moving from the NFL to college, like Bill Belichick. Before joining North Carolina, Lombardi served as the general manager of the Cleveland Browns in 2013. His hiring followed the school’s decision to bring in Belichick, a coach renowned for winning six Super Bowls.
The school hired Belichick to revitalize a football program that often lagged in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Although the team occasionally reached national prominence, these instances were not sustained. Shortly after Belichick started his tenure, Lombardi mentioned that their aim was to run the college program in a similar manner to the NFL. He remarked that the Tar Heels view themselves as the ’33rd NFL team,’ reflecting the professional experience on their staff.
During Belichick’s first season, the Tar Heels had a 4-8 record. They are set to start his second season against TCU in Dublin, Ireland, on August 29.
