As the postseason kicks off, several teams from Northwest Indiana appear poised to contend for state titles. Crown Point, Chesterton, Andrean, and Kouts are leading the charge.
Duneland Conference Success
Teams in the Duneland Athletic Conference have a strong track record, winning the Class 4A state title in the past two seasons. Crown Point, ranked third in the state coaches poll, is aiming to keep the winning streak alive. Coach Steve Strayer noted the team’s strong start, but emphasized they faced challenges midseason, hoping to regain momentum now.
Senior catcher/outfielder Sean Dunlap shines, hitting .471 with nine homers and 44 RBIs, while senior shortstop Caden Matusak and junior Connor Gaines add depth to the lineup. Senior pitcher Logan Johnston, committed to Indiana, leads on the mound with a 6-2 record and a 1.25 ERA.
Chesterton’s Conference Triumph
Chesterton boasts the conference title with a 22-6 record. Coach John Bogner emphasized team cohesion and process-oriented play as keys to their success.
Senior players Rob Czarniecki and Troy Barrett have delivered strong performances. Barrett remains unbeaten at 10-0, dominating with a 0.48 ERA. Czarniecki excels both at bat and on the mound, with impressive stats.
Valparaiso’s Repeat Bid
Valparaiso aims for a back-to-back title following last year’s triumph. Key players DJ Malloy and Trent Gill show consistent leadership, contributing significantly to the Vikings’ efforts.
Lake Central and Andrean’s Ambitions
Lake Central, recently claiming a state title, remains a strong contender, facing No. 9 Munster in the Crown Point Sectional. Coach Mike Swartzentruber stays optimistic about their competitive potential.
Andrean welcomes back Hall of Famer Dave Pishkur to pursue their record 10th state title. With a strong track record, having suffered minimal losses, they remain formidable contenders.
Kouts’ Impressive Run
Kouts continues to impress with 25 consecutive wins, seizing their first outright Porter County Conference round-robin title since 2004. Sophomore Billy Miller and seniors Landon Garrett and Jesse Overholt power the team with notable batting and pitching stats.
Portage’s Underdog Potential
Portage, under Coach Shane Prance, stands as a dark horse in the Class 4A Chesterton Sectional. The senior class, influential since their freshman year, drives the team’s pursuit of their first sectional title since 2013.
Munster and Other State Standouts
Senior players across teams are making significant impacts. Munster’s Nate Southwell leads with 45 RBIs and Morton’s Michael Stevens ranks high in batting averages. Players like Clint Lemmons of Morgan Township showcase exceptional performances with stolen bases.
Ten players, including Munster’s Cayden Adley and Lake Central’s Brayden Walls, are ones to watch for their impressive stats and contributions, marking them as standout talents in Northwest Indiana’s postseason baseball.
