Novak Djokovic’s Unexpected Early Exit
Novak Djokovic, a player often cited as one of the greatest tennis players of recent times, faced a surprising defeat at the U.S. Open. The 24-time Grand Slam champion exited the tournament in the first round. He was defeated by Argentina’s Mariano Navone with scores of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Performance Challenges
Djokovic, aged 39, had a challenging match, making 10 double faults and 70 unforced errors. He explained post-match that he was battling several physical issues.
“It’s something that I’ve been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year: vomiting, throwing up, a serious issue there. Then my whole body starts to collapse, basically cramping and pain. Yeah, the back just gave up in the end and shoulder, and I couldn’t close it out,” Djokovic stated.
This tournament marked the first time Djokovic exited in the first round of the U.S. Open. Entering as the fourth seed and a three-time champion, he struggled to maintain momentum against Navone.
Navone’s Triumph
Navone expressed mixed emotions, recognizing Djokovic’s significance to his career.
“It was very tough for me because you are playing with the ‘GOAT’ on this court. For sure it’s the best thing I’ve had on court. This is an amazing court and the biggest stage. It’s amazing, the way we play. I mean, five sets. … I’m very happy. I don’t know. What can I say?” Navone commented.
At 25, Navone had recently achieved his first ATP tournament win in Romania earlier in the year. His victory over Djokovic is considered a significant milestone in his career.
