Ohio Murder Case Revisited After Netflix Documentary Release

3 weeks ago 0

Recent bodycam footage reveals Mackenzie Shirilla’s father criticizing her and confronting police after her arrest for a crash that led to two fatalities. The case is receiving renewed attention due to a Netflix documentary titled “The Crash.” Shirilla, currently 21, faces two concurrent 15-year-to-life sentences for the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and their friend, Davion Flanagan, 19. Prosecutors argued that she intentionally crashed her Toyota Camry into a brick building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022.

Footage obtained by Fox News Digital shows Steven Shirilla, Mackenzie’s father, arriving at the Strongsville Police Department on November 4, 2022, following his daughter’s arrest. “I need to speak to my daughter,” Steven demanded, insisting that the police should not question her as per their lawyer’s instructions.

Steven expressed disbelief at his daughter’s actions, saying, “She’s 18.” When officers stated Mackenzie could speak for herself, he replied, “Yeah, but she’s a dumb 18-year-old that just turned 18.” His criticism escalated as his wife protested, stating, “All the kids nowadays are dumb.” He pressed the police to ensure they did not question his daughter, reinforcing his demand by shouting as they left, “Don’t ask her any questions!”

The arrest footage offers a new perspective on the hectic moments after Mackenzie’s arrest. Additional video captured the crash’s aftermath, where officers examined the wreck to develop the case. Police records reviewed by Fox News Digital indicate the response to the scene occurred around 6:15 a.m., after Mackenzie’s Camry collided with a building.

Mackenzie was extricated and airlifted to a hospital, while Russo and Flanagan were declared dead at the scene. Investigation data, including Life360 and Event Data Recorder, showed the car moving at 90 mph in a 35 mph area. No brakes were applied before the impact, suggesting the crash was intentional rather than accidental.

A police request prompted the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office to reevaluate the deaths, initially classified as accidental, and confirm the crash as intentional homicide. Prosecutors contended that Mackenzie aimed to end a toxic relationship with Russo, with Flanagan being an unintended casualty.

Mackenzie insists the crash was not premeditated. Since the Netflix series was released, Steven Shirilla will not return to his teaching role at Mary Queen of Peace School as confirmed by the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, which typically does not publicly discuss personnel matters.
