Oilers Face Backlash Over Potential Babcock Hiring Amid NHL Inquiry

3 weeks ago 0

The Edmonton Oilers appear ready to take drastic measures in their quest to secure a Stanley Cup victory. This urgency comes amid concerns that star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl may leave the team if significant progress is not made.

The Oilers reportedly plan to hire Mike Babcock. He resigned as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023, just over ten weeks into the position, following accusations of inappropriate conduct towards players.

News of Babcock’s potential hiring has sparked outrage among the Oilers’ fan base. Many fans have taken to social media, expressing anger and urging the team to reconsider hiring Babcock, known for his controversial past.

Further complicating the situation, the Oilers face possible repercussions from the NHL. TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that the NHLPA has requested an investigation into Babcock’s alleged privacy invasion during his time in Columbus. This investigation would take place if the Oilers proceed with hiring him.

“The NHLPA has asked the NHL to move forward with an investigation into the allegations Mike Babcock invaded players’ privacy during his time in Columbus,” Dreger wrote.

The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun added that the NHL is awaiting the Oilers’ decision on whether to hire Babcock. If they proceed, the league will carry out the investigation as requested by the NHLPA. The incident in question involves accusations that Babcock viewed personal photos on players’ phones during his Columbus tenure.

The investigation’s outcome could influence the Oilers’ final decision. Alternatively, Babcock might face NHL sanctions before commencing his duties in Edmonton.

Babcock’s coaching history includes other contentious tactics as well. He allegedly bullied former Detroit Red Wings player Johan Franzen, contributing to Franzen’s nervous breakdown. In another instance, he asked former Toronto Maple Leafs player Mitch Marner to rank teammates based on effort level. Additionally, Babcock is known to have scratched players like Mike Modano and Mike Commodore due to personal disputes.
