U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker stated on Saturday that Ukrainian strikes within Russia are encouraging both Moscow and Kyiv to move closer to peace talks. This comes as former President Donald Trump continues to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations to end the conflict.
During “The Big Weekend Show,” Whitaker noted that cooperation between both countries is essential for resolving the war. He highlighted the impact of Ukraine’s strong military actions against Russia, suggesting that these attacks might be drawing the two sides nearer to discussions.
“This conflict is not going to be resolved on the battlefield. It’s only going to be resolved through diplomacy and negotiation,” Whitaker stated. “That’s why President Trump and his team continue to talk to both sides to find any similarities between the positions to bring them together.”
Despite the potential for talks, Whitaker warned that significant differences remain between the nations on crucial issues. A resolution might still be far off unless both parties commit to less hostility.
He also expressed that if Putin refuses to compromise, reaching an agreement is “impossible.” Nonetheless, Whitaker expressed optimism, noting Trump’s deal-making skills, which could prove beneficial if a settlement is feasible.
Trump commented on the casualties, indicating that the Ukraine-Russia war claimed 25,000 lives last month and an additional 32,000 the month prior. He specified that 97% of these casualties were soldiers, underscoring the human cost of the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, according to the Center for Strategic & International Studies, Russia has reportedly lost up to 450,000 soldiers since the invasion began in 2022. This data highlights the scale of loss both countries have endured.
The update from Whitaker and Trump’s statements reflect the complex dynamics at play in seeking peace between Ukraine and Russia.
