Fox News reports that CNN will experience a new chapter in its ownership with Paramount merging with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). This transition has prompted mixed feelings among CNN staff.
Paramount’s $111 billion acquisition of WBD faced opposition from several Democratic State Attorneys General, including California’s Rob Bonta. However, both parties reached a settlement instead of prolonging court battles scheduled for 2027. This agreement includes establishing an independent editorial board to oversee CNN and CBS News.
“Let’s just get this done,” remarked a CNN staffer regarding the merger.
Reports suggest mixed sentiments within CNN. While some staff are less opposed now, others assert their views remain unchanged.
CNN braces for potential layoffs and leadership changes. Current CEO Mark Thompson’s future is uncertain, with speculation about Bari Weiss possibly assuming oversight.
“I don’t know who will run CNN,” a staffer expressed, emphasizing the need for decisive leadership.
While the merger offers clarity, anticipated newsroom cuts are causing concern among staff.
“CNN will be diminished,” stated another staffer, acknowledging challenges for legacy media.
Paramount’s CEO, David Ellison, has assured that CNN will retain editorial independence post-merger. Critics raised concerns over possible bias due to Ellison’s associations, but Ellison emphasizes balanced journalism.
In a New York Times essay, Ellison stated his commitment to facts and diverse newsroom perspectives.
“Great news organizations like CNN and CBS News are here to tell it straight down the middle,” he wrote, promoting balanced coverage.
