Patricia Heaton Discusses Her Journey to Sobriety

Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton recently shared insights about her decision to embrace sobriety. In an interview with Woman’s World, Heaton reflected on this significant change that occurred 10 years ago.

Heaton explained that during the Coronavirus pandemic, she experienced a shift in her life. Her children had left home, and she found herself without the familiar anchors of family and work. This absence led her to question how to fill her days effectively.

“Right before the pandemic, my children had left home and I wasn’t working. The things that had always anchored me — my family and my work — were gone. I started thinking, ‘What am I supposed to do today?'” she shared.

Heaton noticed that her drinking habits gradually increased over time. Initially, what started as a glass of wine while cooking turned into more frequent drinking throughout her routine.

She recounted a poignant moment when she found herself consuming nearly an entire bottle of wine alone. This realization prompted her to seek guidance through prayer.

“God, I think you want me to stop drinking. I would be willing to stop, but you have to make it happen because I can’t. I’m willing, but I’m unable,” she prayed.

Heaton’s change in perspective on alcohol and her turn to religion were critical steps in her journey. She vividly recalled an incident with her sons and their friends where she struggled to pronounce a word, leading her youngest son to point out her inebriation.

“I couldn’t even say the word ‘tradition.’ That moment was an eye-opener,” she remembered. This incident was a significant catalyst in her sobriety journey.

The following day, Heaton decided to fully commit to her new path. Recognizing this moment as a message, she marked the beginning of her sober lifestyle eight years ago.

Heaton is the mother of four sons: Samuel, John, Joseph, and Daniel. She shares her children with her husband, David Hunt, a British actor and director. The couple married in 1990.
