The New England Patriots narrowly avoided a serious issue Sunday during a celebrity softball event. Rhamondre Stevenson, the team’s running back who recently caught a touchdown pass from Drake Maye in the Super Bowl, faced an injury scare. During the game organized by Maye, comedian Matt Rife accidentally fell on Stevenson’s leg in the midst of a rundown, causing concern among Patriots fans.
In footage shared online by Boston journalist Marlee Wierda, Stevenson’s left leg appeared to bend unnaturally as Rife stumbled while attempting to reach second base. Despite the unsettling video, Stevenson stood up and smiled, indicating he was okay.
“Half the Patriots beat the s–t out of me,” Rife joked on Instagram following the close call. Despite the incident, Rife, like the iconic Pete Rose during his All-Star Game participation in the ’70s, played fiercely. The Ohio native, aged 30, performed admirably, securing a triple to right-center, hitting a ground-rule double, and causing an uproar by colliding with Stevenson in a manner reminiscent of Rose taking out Ray Fosse in 1970.
Furthermore, Rife maintained his rebellious softball persona and refused to admit fault for the mishap. A Patriots fan commented, warning that his actions might land him in a difficult situation in Massachusetts. Quick to respond, Rife defended his actions, explaining he was committed to winning.
In a post-game update, it was revealed that Rife’s team emerged victorious, mirroring Rose’s National League victory back in 1970. Rife made sure everyone on social media, particularly on Twitter, knew about the triumph.
