Paul Pelosi, husband of Representative Nancy Pelosi, faces a hit-and-run charge after an incident in Yountville, California. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office reported the event in a press release.
A spokesperson for the Pelosi family communicated to Newsweek via email that Paul Pelosi has apologized to the vehicle owner. He also assured responsibility for the damages. Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not comment further on the matter.
Incident Details
The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on Friday in Napa County’s wine region. A witness dialed 911, reporting that a brown convertible hit a parked and unoccupied vehicle, damaging its rear, then left the scene. Investigators identified 86-year-old Paul Pelosi as the driver, and no injuries were reported.
Paul was not arrested for this misdemeanor. The sheriff’s department plans a driver re-evaluation referral to the California DMV for Paul, a routine procedure for elderly drivers.
Paul told deputies he knew he hit something but did not realize what, continuing until his vehicle became disabled. Tests showed no alcohol influence, as determined by the Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device, ruling out Driving Under the Influence.
Previous Legal Issues
In May 2022, Paul pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges in Napa County. He received a five-day jail sentence and three years of probation. He served two days, earned credit for two days, and completed one day in a work program.
His probation included attending a drinking driver class and installing an ignition interlock device. He also paid around $5,000 in victim restitution and nearly $2,000 in fines.
Background
In a 1957 accident, a newspaper reported that a 16-year-old Paul crashed his car, resulting in the death of his 19-year-old brother, David Pelosi. The report suggested David’s neck brace strangled him after the vehicle flipped.
Personal History
Paul Pelosi gained attention in October 2022 after an assault in his San Francisco home. The intruder injured Paul, leading to hospital treatment and surgery for a skull fracture and other injuries. The assailant, David DePape, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Professionally, Pelosi operates Financial Leasing Service, a venture capital firm. He previously owned the Sacramento Mountain Lions football team. Born in San Francisco, he married Nancy Pelosi in 1963.
