Paul Pelosi, husband of the former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge. Authorities allege he hit a parked vehicle in Napa County, California, and drove away before his car became disabled.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident occurred Friday afternoon in Yountville, about an hour north of San Francisco. A witness observed a brown convertible striking an unoccupied parked vehicle and then continuing north. Deputies later found the damaged car partially blocking a road. They identified Paul Pelosi, 86, as the driver.
According to the sheriff’s office, Pelosi admitted to deputies he was aware of hitting something but did not know what. He drove until his vehicle could no longer operate.
The investigation determined no alcohol was involved. A Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device showed .00, ruling out Driving Under the Influence, the sheriff’s office stated.
Investigators held Pelosi responsible but did not arrest him at the scene. This is common for such misdemeanor offenses. Instead, they will refer the case to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution. Additionally, they plan to submit a driver re-evaluation referral to the California DMV, as is routine with elderly drivers.
This incident emerges over two years after a previous guilty plea by Pelosi to misdemeanor drunken driving causing injury from a crash in Napa County in May 2022. His sentence included three years of probation, jail time fulfilled through credits and a work program, a three-month DUI education program, installation of an ignition interlock device, and fines.
In contrast to 2022, investigators confirmed no DUI involvement in the recent crash.
Paul Pelosi has stayed in the public eye since an October 2022 hammer attack at his San Francisco home. David DePape, who invaded the Pelosi residence seeking Nancy Pelosi before attacking Paul with a hammer, received a life sentence in October 2024 on state charges. DePape had previously been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. The attack caused significant injuries to Paul Pelosi, including a skull fracture.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi has represented San Francisco’s 11th congressional district for many years.
