Pentagon Advances Laser Weaponry for Military Use

Laser weapons have been a significant focus for the Pentagon, promising capabilities like shooting down enemy drones and missiles swiftly. The Army is close to awarding a contract for the enduring high energy laser (E-HEL). If operationally deployed, this would signify the Army’s first laser weapon as a permanent operational capability.

Transition to Operational Reality

The development of the E-HEL comes at a time when warfare is evolving. Inexpensive drones are becoming a challenge, often bypassing traditional air defenses and leading to the use of costly missile interceptors. The E-HEL represents a potential shift towards countering aerial threats without relying solely on expensive weaponry.

Ongoing Developments and Collaborations

Army acquisition chief Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano indicated ongoing negotiations for the E-HEL with AeroVironment. The technology has shown promise at the White Sands Missile Range. Notably, the Army’s move is among several efforts across different military branches and global partners.

It’s not about the laser anymore. It’s all these other things that make it workable as a weapon system.

The Air Force is deploying its compact laser weapon system overseas. The Navy continues testing HELIOS aboard destroyers. Internationally, Israel and China are also advancing their military laser technologies.

Challenges and the Path Forward

Developing functional laser weapons has been a lengthy process. Challenges include power generation, beam control, and thermal management. Solutions also need to account for environmental factors like dust and weather. Ensuring operators receive proper training and system maintenance remains crucial.

Despite these advancements, lasers will not replace existing missile defenses. Lasers operate as line-of-sight weapons, striking only visible targets. Missiles are necessary for engaging distant threats.

Additional Directed-Energy Efforts

Lasers are part of a broader directed-energy initiative. High-powered microwave systems, such as Epirus’ Leonidas, offer solutions against drone swarms by disrupting electronics. Radio-frequency technologies are also being tested to jam communication links between drones and operators.

The Pentagon’s continued investment in these technologies illustrates a strategic shift toward more cost-effective and versatile defense systems.
