Senator Susan Collins, a Republican, has faced criticism from Planned Parenthood for her vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh later played a key role in overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision impacting abortion rights. The endorsement of Democrat Graham Platner by Planned Parenthood marks a significant political shift in Maine.
Graham Platner, a Democrat seeking to unseat Senator Collins, and Alexis McGill Johnson, the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood, were involved in the endorsement announcement. The event took place on June 22, 2026, in Portland, Maine.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the nation’s largest abortion rights organization, officially expressed its support for Platner. The decision reflects the organization’s stance on protecting and promoting abortion rights. Senator Collins had previously been recognized by a Maine affiliate for her support of Planned Parenthood. Her opposition to efforts by congressional Republicans to reduce federal funding had been praised as recently as May 2025.
During the Portland event, Alexis McGill Johnson criticized Senator Collins. Johnson suggested Collins had failed to advocate consistently for abortion rights. “Senator Collins is a fair-weather feminist at best,” stated Johnson, alongside supporters displaying Platner’s name. The signs were printed in the group’s distinctive hot pink color.
The electoral contest has presented challenges for some Democrats in Maine. Although there have been concerns regarding Graham Platner’s treatment of women, anger remains over Collins’s confirmation vote for Brett M. Kavanaugh in 2018. In 2022, Kavanaugh was part of the conservative majority that overturned Roe v. Wade. The landmark ruling had protected the constitutional right to abortion for nearly fifty years.
Angela Kuefler, a Democratic strategist, commented on the situation. Kuefler noted the Platner campaign’s potential strategy to use abortion rights as leverage against Senator Collins. The campaign aims to weaken Collins’s reputation as a moderate. Additionally, the strategy seeks to strengthen support among female voters. Women comprise the majority of the Maine electorate.
