Plans for a New Cultural Center
The Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America aims to relocate its base from Chicago’s Southwest Side to Orland Park. Village officials are excited about developing a cultural center that reflects the community’s heritage and attracts visitors.
On May 29, Mayor Jim Dodge and about 200 residents gathered at Signature Barn Banquet Hall to discuss the potential center. It might be located northwest of Interstate 80 and La Grange Road. The mayor highlighted its benefits for Orland Park’s commercial base and community.
Location and Cost Considerations
According to Krzysztof Zoltek, the organization’s secretary general, the Alliance has considered buying a parcel near Interstate 80 and La Grange Road, owned by St. Xavier University. However, the price of $3 million for the land and an additional $15 million for construction poses financial challenges.
Zoltek explained the need for a new facility as the existing Chicago center no longer meets the needs of the expanding Polish American population. The search for a location has been ongoing, with members currently traveling long distances to attend events.
Cultural Heritage and Community Engagement
The Polish Highlanders community values outdoor activities and events, reflecting their cultural roots. The chosen site must accommodate a banquet hall for 1,000 people and outdoor space.
Community engagement has been a priority. The Alliance has received offers from other sellers. However, the chance to present plans and engage with the public, facilitated by Mayor Dodge, is seen as crucial.
Challenges and Opportunities
Mayor Dodge, familiar with the Alliance’s Chicago base, recognizes the project’s cultural significance and challenges. He supports the organization’s efforts to preserve cultural traditions through language, music, art, and events. The dialogues between the community and the organization aim to explore a mutually beneficial arrangement.
