Political Dispute Over Hasan Piker Intersects Michigan Senate Race

1 month ago 0

Conservative critics targeted Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell after her comments regarding Republican efforts to link Michigan’s Senate race to socialist streamer Hasan Piker. Critics argue Dingell’s frustration exposes a political vulnerability for Democrats.

The Republican National Committee’s research account wrote, “Debbie Dingell crashes out over terrorist-sympathizer Hasan Piker who has called to kill Republicans.” This statement references Dingell campaigning with Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed following questions about Piker, whose past inflammatory statements have subjected Democrats to scrutiny.

Democratic Backlash Grows

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker appeared alongside Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Critics admonished Democrats for associating with Piker and pressured El-Sayed to disavow him. Senate Republicans on social media noted, “YIKES: Democrats are getting tired of defending Abdul El-Sayed for his antisemitic campaign surrogate Hasan Piker. Rep. Debbie Dingell: ‘I am DONE. So don’t any reporter ask me again about Hasan Piker.’ El-Sayed has yet to disavow Piker.”

John R. Lott Jr., president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, commented, “Hint: she can stop these questions by disassociating herself with Piker & stopping campaigning with him.” Conservative commentator Shawn Farash added, “Debbie Dingell does not want anyone talking about Hasan Piker because it is bad for Democrats ahead of the midterms… Watch how fast they all forget that Hasan Piker exists.”

Town Hall Remarks

“I am done, so don’t any reporter ask me again about Hasan Piker,” stated Dingell. “It’s not what November is about. Republicans are trying to make it – they’re trying to divide us, and we got to stop letting them try to divide us.”

Dingell, alongside Representative Jamie Raskin in Ann Arbor for an event supporting El-Sayed, insisted that Piker is not central to the election. Dingell told reporters, “I don’t agree with Hasan Piker on a lot of stuff, and I really don’t agree with him on some of the woman things he said.” She also questioned the reason why Piker has many followers.

Dingell’s office disclosed to Fox News Digital that she would refrain from addressing further questions about Piker. “Congresswoman Dingell made clear this afternoon she will not answer any more questions about him,” said her spokesperson Matt Krack. “She doesn’t agree with him on many things, but this election isn’t about him. It’s about healthcare, affordability, hunger and other issues that impact working men and women.”

Continued Criticism

Conservative commentators and social media users continued to highlight Dingell’s statements, suggesting vulnerability due to El-Sayed’s association with Piker. Comments on social media included, “No, your party can’t stand up and say anything because they are so in shambles that they need a radical,” and “Debbie just told everyone what the Dems weak point is. Be a shame if this got exploited.”

Tim Young, a media fellow with the Heritage Foundation, stated, “Call me crazy, but I think everyone should bring up the Democrat surrogate who thinks America deserved 9/11…” This sentiment resonated with comments from the Michigan Forward Network, noting issues with campaign associations.

El-Sayed was questioned during an NBC “Meet the Press” appearance regarding Piker’s comments. El-Sayed deemed the statement “dumb,” clarifying, “I did not believe America deserved the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks,” while rejecting the notion to exclude Piker entirely.

In a previous statement, El-Sayed condemned antisemitism and affirmed, “nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople.” Fox News Digital attempted to contact Hasan Piker for comment.
