Pope Leo XIV revisited the Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel in the medieval village of Genazzano on Monday. This return marked a significant event as he revealed a fresco illustrating himself in prayer. This fresco now graces an upper cornice of the basilica, symbolizing his devotion.
The Pope celebrated Mass at the sanctuary with his Augustinian brothers. His visit follows a tradition of past popes whose visits to the site were honored with portraits. This tradition dates back to Pope Urban VIII in 1630.
Leo initially visited the sanctuary just days after his election on May 10, 2025. The place holds a deep significance for him due to his connections with the Augustinian religious order. The sanctuary, maintained by Augustinian friars, has been a pilgrimage site since the 15th century.
Notably, Pope Leo XIII, whom Leo XIV shares his namesake with, elevated the structure to a minor basilica in the early 1900s. During his recent visit, Leo reflected on his 2025 visit, highlighting the comfort and guidance he felt from the Madonna of Good Counsel, emphasizing her role in his faith journey.
With the summer ending, Leo and the Vatican are resuming their activities. The Pope is preparing for the Vatican’s busy autumn schedule, including a trip to France at the end of September and visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru in November.
