Potential Plea Deal Discussed for Luigi Mangione

Justice Department prosecutors and defense attorneys for Luigi Mangione requested a conference with a U.S. judge on Tuesday. This development has led to speculation that Mangione, accused of assassination, might agree to a plea deal before his trial on state murder charges. No comments were received from either side after an anonymous report suggested the meeting would focus on a potential agreement.

A letter to the judge requesting the conference did not specify its purpose. It read, “The parties write jointly to request a conference with the Court. Based on communications with Chambers, we understand that the Court is available to hold the conference on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.”

Mangione is charged with stalking and shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. The attack took place outside a New York City hotel. Jury selection for the state case is set for September 8, and the federal trial may begin in early 2027.

In a July statement, Manhattan prosecutors addressed reports of a possible plea deal. Assistant DA Joel Seidemann mentioned the potential impact of a federal guilty plea on the state prosecution. He noted the need for the court to consider any victim’s family opposition.

Judge Gregory Carro issued an order to protect jurors’ identities and addresses. He cited threats, harassment, and interference by individuals claiming to support Mangione. The defense has also requested livestreaming of the trial, which experts deem unlikely under current New York law.

Mangione maintains his innocence on all charges. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state court and life without parole in federal court.
