As some NFL players consider returning to college football, teams face new and complex decisions. The Alabama Crimson Tide is among those schools, and coach Kalen DeBoer discussed the possibility of reinstating a former player. On Monday, he noted that this option is being evaluated, although there’s no immediate action planned.
Coach DeBoer explained that communication with athletic director Greg Byrne outlines the procedures for such situations. A return of past roster members could be possible, but immediate play isn’t likely. This situation stems from legal rulings on the 2022 recruiting class. Some of these players were granted an additional NCAA eligibility year before a stay was applied to that decision.
Former Florida State player Thomas Castellanos, for example, received individual court approval and is transferring schools. Although DeBoer did not specify which Class of 2022 recruit might return, he shifted focus during a press conference to talk about kickers and punters. This class includes some athletes who fell short of expectations or transferred away.
Particularly, it seems doubtful that Jihaad Campbell, Ty Simpson, or Tyler Booker, happy with their NFL paths, would return. However, wide receiver Kobe Prentice, recently released by the New England Patriots, emerges as a potential candidate. Also, running back Jam Miller might come back to address the team’s injury challenges.
The landscape of these developments remains unsettled, and DeBoer remarked that while he can’t focus on it at present, the situation is continuously evolving. “We’ll see how things progress,” he stated. He emphasized that quick changes are possible and communication with Byrne keeps him informed of ongoing deliberations at various levels.
This current environment of college football may mean familiar players could don the Alabama jersey again soon.
