President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be lowered across the United States for a week to honor Dolly Parton’s passing. The legendary country music singer died peacefully at the age of 80 in Nashville, Tennessee, as announced by her representatives.

Trump expressed his condolences and admiration for Parton on Truth Social, referring to her as one of the greatest country singers in history. He emphasized the significant loss felt by millions, acknowledging her unique contribution to music.

“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away,” Trump noted, emphasizing the impact of her loss.

In addition to his online tribute, Trump declared a formal presidential gesture by ordering the lowering of flags nationwide. This gesture began at 6:00 PM on the day of her passing.

The announcement of Parton’s death described her as a bright star whose charm and warmth made people feel like family. Her legacy extends beyond music to her remarkable kindness and humor.

“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family,” the announcement read.

Parton’s career spanned over seven decades, involving music, acting, writing, and philanthropy. She was preceded by her husband of 59 years, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in 2025, as well as her parents Avie Lee Caroline Owens and Robert Lee Parton Sr.

A private service, adhering to Parton’s wishes, will be held for her family. Fans are encouraged to honor her memory via social media or her official website. The family requests donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library instead of sending flowers.

Tributes poured in nationwide. Tennessee officials and public figures, including Sen. Marsha Blackburn and House Republicans, celebrated Parton as an American icon and national treasure. Rep. Tim Burchett and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also expressed their sorrow and support.

The Department of the Interior and the Franklin Police Department highlighted Parton’s ties to Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains.

Parton’s family concluded with a message of the lasting influence of her music and generosity, stating that her songs and philanthropic work will endure.
