President Donald Trump will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks at the Pentagon this year. This decision comes despite the significance of New York City in Trump’s history, as he was there during the tragic events of 2001.
During the attacks in 2001, Trump, a native New Yorker, was present in New York City. He attended the Ground Zero ceremony last in 2024, alongside Senator JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, in New York.
Vice President JD Vance is expected to represent the administration at the Ground Zero ceremony. Other officials will participate in the commemoration at Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Reports initially suggested Trump’s decision was influenced by being unable to speak at the Ground Zero event, as speeches are traditionally not permitted. This claim was strongly denied by the White House with Communications Director Steven Cheung labeling it as ‘FAKE NEWS.’
“As a proud New Yorker, President Trump has spoken about his own experiences watching the horrific events of September 11, 2001,” said Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman. “On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, the President will remember those who were killed at the hands of evil terrorists, honor their loved ones, and pay tribute to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to rescue their fellow Americans.”
Trump’s history with commemorations of 9/11 includes spending the anniversaries at various locations. He honored victims at the Pentagon in 2017 and 2019, and visited Shanksville, Pennsylvania in 2018 and 2020. Last year, he attended a New York Yankees game dedicated to the victims after visiting the Pentagon. His recent presence at Ground Zero was during the ceremony held in 2024 alongside then-President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
