President Trump visited Medinah Country Club on Sunday for the final day of the Presidents Cup, taking on the role of honorary chairman. His presence attracted both supporters and protesters in the Chicagoland area.
The president’s arrival featured a flyover at the country club approximately 90 minutes before the golfers began. Addressing the crowd briefly at O’Hare, he highlighted the caliber of golf on display, saying, “You’ll be seeing the best players, the best golfers anywhere in the world.”
At the Presidents Cup tournament, groups of protesters and supporters gathered outside. Allison Galvan, executive director of Grito Latino Addison Community Center Inc., expressed opposition, while Terry Newsome countered by stating that not everyone in Illinois is against the president.
Local police monitored the situation as interactions between the groups intensified. Once inside, Mr. Trump stayed at the first tee box to streamline security efforts. Fans, like Carolyn Friedrichs, navigated TSA-style screenings and observed a strong security presence, including SWAT officers.
Mr. Trump addressed thousands briefly, emphasizing that the crowd came for golf, not speeches. He expressed satisfaction with the country’s progress and shook hands with each player as they teed off.
Preparations for the president’s visit included constructing a bulletproof glass suite, which he chose not to use. Bruce Asmussen, dressed for the occasion, commented on the lively atmosphere, noting the excitement among attendees.
This marked Mr. Trump’s first public appearance in Chicago since the 2024 election, requiring months of planning. Carolyn Friedrichs reflected the general sentiment, appreciating both the golf and the presence of the president.
With a change in schedule, President Trump stayed for the closing ceremonies. Air Force One was set to depart back to Washington, D.C., later that evening.
