Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Return to the UK: No Change in Royal Status

3 weeks ago 0

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the UK, but their homecoming does not mark any change in their royal status. Buckingham Palace has made it clear that the couple’s position remains constant since they stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020.

The Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family,

read a letter sent on behalf of King Charles III, as confirmed by Fox News. The letter emphasized that their position, distinct from state and royal duties undertaken by active members of the Royal Family, offers them personal freedom in terms of financial independence and privacy.

Despite moving back to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the palace reiterated there is no change to their current status. Their royal titles remain unused, and their charitable work remains a personal matter conducted privately.

The letter was delivered by the Lord Chamberlain to senior officials in government and military circles, underscoring that a change in location does not alter royal status. Although the Sussexes plan to reside at a private, nonroyal home, specific details about their residence remain undisclosed.

Their return has sparked renewed criticism about the ‘half-in, half-out’ royal role. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich noted that Harry and Meghan’s return does not mean regaining official roles, nor was there any agreement for a partial royal position. Attempts to create such arrangements have previously been thwarted.

Grant Harrold, a former butler to King Charles III, speculated that Harry’s desire to spend more personal time with his father might have influenced the family’s decision to move back to the UK. However, returning to Britain places them under close scrutiny from both the public and palace officials.
