VLADIVOSTOK — Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated on Thursday a possibility to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kyiv is anticipating a “new dynamic” in peace initiatives.
Putin’s Remarks at Economic Forum
During an economic forum in Russia’s far east, Putin acknowledged that countries such as the U.S. and China are prepared to back a peace settlement. However, he emphasized that resolution rests with Russia and Ukraine. He expressed gratitude towards international efforts to aid in reaching a settlement, stating, “Is there a chance? Yes, there is.”
Ukraine’s Outlook on Peace Efforts
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed optimism in Kyiv. He believes there will be renewed momentum in peace efforts due to increased political and diplomatic activities globally. Sybiha encouraged the public to keep updated with ongoing news but did not provide further details.
Amidst continuous Russian drone assaults reported in Kyiv, a rare glimmer of hope has appeared in Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II. Though initial U.S.-mediated talks occurred in February, geopolitical distractions have since shifted focus.
Intensified Hostilities and Economic Impact
The conflict has seen a surge in hostilities with intensified air strikes and naval confrontations. Such clashes have affected global grain markets, with Chicago wheat futures dropping over 2% following Putin’s comments.
Despite optimistic statements, concrete steps towards progress remain unspecified. Putin criticized Ukraine’s attacks on civilian ships as complicating peace talks and labeled them as “state terrorism.”
Ukrainian Concerns Over Russian Airspace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy advised airlines and insurance companies about potential dangers in Russian skies due to Ukrainian drones. He stressed these drones aim only at military targets, not civilian aircraft.
Ukraine has urged the UN’s aviation agency to persuade countries to cease operations over Russian airspace. The airspace on Ukraine’s side has been rendered unsafe since Russia’s invasion in 2022.
Diplomatic Contacts and International Involvement
Putin disclosed that contacts with Ukraine persist, albeit mainly via intelligence agencies. He acknowledged ongoing communications but expressed uncertainty about their efficacy in forging a peace agreement.
During a joint appearance with Sybiha in Kyiv, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar signaled India’s willingness to assist in peace efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently communicated to Putin that the conflict should end for the sake of humanity. New Delhi is willing to support any efforts to halt the fighting.
