Protests Disrupt Ports in England Over Anti-Migrant Sentiments

3 weeks ago 0

Over the weekend, anti-migrant protests led to significant disruptions at the Port of Dover, one of the busiest maritime passenger ports globally. Demonstrators masked in balaclavas, dressed in black, and carrying English and British flags, blocked access to the ferry port. Their chants included “stop the boats” and “Christ is king.” This protest caused traffic to halt, creating a four-mile backup and affecting both transport and freight operations.

The Kent Police labeled the protest as spontaneous and made no arrests. However, Mike Tapp, a local Labour Party lawmaker, disputed this, suggesting the demonstration was organized. Tapp voiced concerns about police preparedness in The Mirror, questioning if intelligence had been overlooked and if additional police forces could be deployed swiftly to prevent future disruptions.

The protest was organized by the Patriot Platform, a new far-right group led by Daniel Thomas, known online as Danny Tommo. Thomas praised the event on social media and hinted at future actions. He claimed that legal counsel was available during the protest, ensuring the rights of the activists were communicated to police. Kent Police has not confirmed this claim.

Dover has been central to the UK’s debate on immigration, especially concerning “small boats” carrying migrants across the English Channel from France. Since 2021, nearly 200,000 migrants have crossed, spotlighting this issue within British politics. While fewer crossings have been recorded this year, the topic remains contentious.

The UK’s Labour-led government condemned the protest, emphasizing the importance of peaceful protests but criticizing the disorder caused in Dover. Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, also criticized the protest, particularly the use of balaclavas, during a broadcast on GB News.

Second Day of Protests

The following day, a separate demonstration occurred in Portsmouth. This protest involved an intercepted boat carrying about 140 migrants. The UK Coastguard, a helicopter, and lifeboats managed the operation, transporting the migrants to Portsmouth. Thomas, once again, was active on social media, encouraging supporters to engage. Protesters confronted police as authorities transported migrants by bus to processing centers.

Emma Reynolds, a cabinet member, called the actions during these protests “thuggish and intimidating” in a BBC News interview.

Political Tensions Over Migration

Anti-migrant protests have increased across Britain in the past two years. These protests have often targeted accommodations for asylum seekers, leading to violence in cities like Glasgow and Belfast. Activist Tommy Robinson has played a major role in these movements, organizing large demonstrations and attracting international attention.

Despite governmental efforts to control migration under both Conservative and Labour administrations, significant numbers continue to make the journey from France. In 2025, over 40,000 migrants crossed, prompting ongoing public discontent. From January to September 2026, around 17,000 crossings have been recorded, a 43% reduction from the same period the previous year. However, tensions remain high, fueled by activists determined to spotlight the issue.
