A pet owner, Heber, shared a revealing experience about leaving her puppy alone for the first time. The incident involved her 3-month-old Pomeranian named Marky. She left him for a quick 30-minute errand, pondering if the crate was a good idea. Soon, she revisited the decision.
Heber checked the pet camera and was met with a surprising sight. The little pup launched a vocal protest, crying out for his family. Heber shared the scene on Instagram under the account @markyandmilly, illustrating Marky’s insistence on company.
Beyond the cries, Marky managed an escape, jumping over the crate. This unexpected jailbreak led Heber to reconsider using the crate altogether. Reflecting on the incident, she decided to stop using it. “We decided to let him free roam,” Heber noted, stating how much happier Marky became without confinements.
The change proved beneficial. Heber mentioned the family expanded with another dog, a companion for Marky. This addition brought joy and company, eliminating the need for another crate escape.
Crate or No Crate?
Crate training is a common practice among dog owners, especially for puppies. The technique, however, garners varied opinions. Experts emphasize crates as a safe haven, not as punishment. The American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests crates offer a secure area for dogs to relax and sleep, aiding in house training and curbing destructive behavior.
Yet, crate training needs a tailored approach. The AKC highlights that forcing dogs into crates or using them as punishment can breed negativity. Instead, gradual introduction and positive associations are recommended, fostering voluntary crate use.
