Putin’s Speech at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum Amid Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to address the annual International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia. This event follows recent Ukrainian drone strikes in the city.

Impact on Economic Forum

The forum has traditionally been used by Putin to highlight Russia’s economic prospects and attract international investments. The drone attacks, however, have cast a shadow over this year’s conference. An oil terminal was set on fire, flights encountered disruptions, and mobile internet was restricted to counter further strikes.

Russia’s Economic Situation

Russia’s economy, valued at $3 trillion, faces stagnation. The boost from increased military expenditure is waning. To manage the budget deficit, the government has increased taxes and domestic borrowing.

Putin’s Commitment to Defense

In response to the drone threats, Putin pledged to enhance Russia’s air defense capabilities. He acknowledged some drones bypass Russia’s defenses, emphasizing improvements in this area.

“Russia has an air defense system, we need to improve it, strengthen it, and we will do that,” Putin stated.

Negotiations with Ukraine

During the forum, Putin expressed openness to ending the conflict with Ukraine through diplomatic means. He emphasized the need for both sides to agree on compromises previously discussed with former US President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached out for face-to-face negotiations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned Putin had not yet seen Zelenskyy’s proposal.

Ongoing Conflict

The military stalemate has resulted in increased aerial attacks from both Russia and Ukraine, as seen by the recent incidents in St. Petersburg.

The forum, known as the “Russian Davos,” is expected to draw over 24,000 attendees. Western participation remains low due to Russia’s continued military actions in Ukraine.
