Since its inception last year, Real American Freestyle (RAF) has rapidly gained popularity. Originating from the efforts of the late Hulk Hogan, Chad Bronstein, Izzy Martinez, and Eric Bischoff, the league aims to establish professional freestyle wrestling across the United States and globally. Notable champions like Wyatt Hendrickson and Kennedy Blades have brought attention to RAF.
Recently, RAF became part of the rumor mill as Bronstein and Martinez revealed discussions with NFL legend Ray Lewis to participate in a match by year’s end. Although a finalized deal has yet to be announced, negotiations appear to be on a positive track.
“I don’t know if he’s going to be able to do it,”
said Kurt Angle to OutKick Dropkick, speaking on behalf of Gambling.com. Angle, a former WWE star and Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling, expressed skepticism about Lewis’s success against top-tier opponents. He acknowledged Lewis’s wrestling background from high school but doubted the likelihood of a genuine competitive match if the event proceeded.
Despite these uncertainties, Angle recognized Lewis’s athletic prowess. At 51, Lewis was a Florida state wrestling champion before shifting focus to a renowned football career. Angle, with previous experience as an RAF commentator, mentioned no hard feelings about his departure, and he envisions RAF evolving akin to UFC.
“I got let go due to budget and I completely understood,” Angle shared with OutKick Dropkick. Although uncertain of how successful commentary was for him, he appreciated the opportunity. He believes RAF is poised for a promising future, traveling worldwide for events including locations like Russia, Europe, and India.
Wrestling enjoys considerable popularity globally, although its appeal varies by region. Angle noted robust fan bases in Eastern Europe and Asia. He foresees RAF becoming a dynamic organization, given its commitment to signing top wrestlers from diverse backgrounds.
Real American Freestyle continues to broaden its reach, with RAF14 set to take place in Las Vegas on October 23. The event will be broadcast live on Fox Nation, maintaining RAF’s expanding presence in the wrestling world.
