Rebuilding Life: Five Years After a Vicious Acid Attack

1 hour ago 0

Nafiah Ikram was approaching her home in March 2021 when she faced a life-altering attack. A stranger threw acid in her face, causing severe injuries. Over the past five years, she has undergone multiple surgeries in an effort to heal physically and emotionally.

Ikram, now 27, frequents a Long Island nail salon. Dressed in a pink and white jogger and matching headphones, she aims to reclaim a feeling of beauty and identity. These visits are part of her efforts to regain a sense of normalcy and confront the image in the mirror that she sometimes refers to as a “monster.”

“I’m trying my best to find my way back to the version of myself that I remember, because she was happy,” said Ms. Ikram.

The journey to merge her past and current selves is ongoing. These two identities occasionally intersect in places like the salon, her bedroom mirror, and moments of reflection. However, she acknowledges that a complete reconciliation may never occur.

Ikram identifies as a “girly girl,” fond of makeup and dressing up. The attack happened shortly after she finished a shift at CVS Pharmacy. The image of the assailant, partially hidden in a hoodie, remains vivid in her memory. For years, police investigations in Nassau County yielded little progress in her case.
