The American Red Cross has announced a critical shortage in its blood supply across the United States. Supplies have reached dangerously low levels, prompting a national emergency.

Dr. Baia Lasky, the organization’s medical director, explained the severe impact this shortage will have on hospitals. There is an urgent need for donations, especially of type O blood.

Urgent Need for Donations

Type O blood donations are crucial. With levels hitting a four-year low, the shortage threatens the availability of lifesaving blood. Type O positive blood is the most commonly used for transfusions, suitable for 80% of patients.

Contributing Factors

Several conditions this summer have affected donor turnout. Extreme heat, poor air quality, and foodborne illnesses have all played a role. Other blood collection organizations are reporting similar shortages.

Addressing the Crisis

Officials stated that adding three more donors per blood drive could stabilize the supply. The Red Cross urges Americans to book appointments using the Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Leadership’s Response

Chris Hrouda, president of Red Cross Biomedical Services, emphasized the responsibility to strengthen the blood supply. Following a previous crisis in January 2022, additional safeguards were implemented.

“Blood donations simply are not keeping pace with hospital demand,” said Hrouda. “Type O blood, in particular, is under significant strain.”

He concluded by highlighting the importance for every eligible person to donate blood promptly.
