Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, has once again called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump by filing a new resolution on Monday. Green accuses Trump of presenting a significant threat to the United States, its Constitution, and democracy itself. Trump is alleged to have violated Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of the Constitution by failing to faithfully execute his presidential duties.
The impeachment resolution claims Trump has misused presidential powers. It criticizes his management of immigration authorities such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The document accuses Trump of transforming these agencies into unaccountable paramilitary forces, involved in unlawful actions and coverups of civilian killings. Named victims include Renée Good, Alex Pretti, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. Green argues Trump’s actions are leading the U.S. towards an authoritarian state.
Amidst these accusations, Rep. Al Green voices concerns. He emphasizes that these impeachment efforts, even without Congressional approval, highlight disapproval and demonstrate active vigilance by some lawmakers. Green has pursued impeachment on several occasions during Trump’s presidency. Despite these efforts, the Republican majority in Congress suggests this resolution will face substantial hurdles.
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis addresses the accusations. She argues that statements like Green’s fuel increased assaults against law enforcement officers. Bis maintains that ICE and CBP personnel risk their lives to capture criminals like murderers and terrorists, citing historic reductions in violent crime under Trump’s leadership. The Department of Homeland Security, ICE, and CBP were also contacted for comments.
Regarding the previous impeachments Trump faced during his first term, the Senate did not achieve the necessary votes for conviction. Even during the second impeachment, conducted post-presidency, the Senate fell short of convicting him.
