Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., attended an event at Cornell University hosted by the Young Democratic Socialists of America where a controversial slogan was chanted. The event was branded by her campaign as a ‘Students vs. Billionaires’ town hall.
Mina Petrova, president of the hosting group, and Zoe Reisman, co-chair, led approximately 2,000 attendees in chanting ‘from the river to the sea.’ This phrase is often criticized for its anti-Israel connotations. Petrova stated, ‘Cornell is fundamentally a capitalist institution prioritizing profit over students and community,’ receiving applause for her remarks.
This event forms part of an ongoing discourse around student activism and anti-imperialism, with Reisman declaring solidarity with oppressed peoples. Despite requests for comment, YDSA did not respond to Fox News Digital.
Ocasio-Cortez addressed accusations of censorship, stating, ‘Whether it’s about Palestine or many others, we must respond to the crackdown.’ Her remarks underscore her campaign’s focus on increasing voter turnout in Democratic areas while confronting union formation challenges.
Poll results indicate skepticism about the Democratic Socialists of America. A Fox News Poll shows 55% of registered voters view the DSA unfavorably. Only 30% report a positive view, suggesting a divide in perception. These findings could affect GOP strategies, shaping the midterm election narrative to focus on choice over referendum.
The slogan, considered antisemitic by Jewish organizations, was visually displayed at protests near Tulane University, emphasizing broader tensions surrounding the issue.
