A new poll from Siena University reveals that Republican Bruce Blakeman is closing the gap on Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the race for New York governor. Although New York is traditionally a Democratic stronghold, recent political cycles have shown narrowed margins for Democrats in the state. For instance, Kamala Harris secured fewer votes in the state than expected, in comparison to Joe Biden’s performance in 2020. Similarly, Governor Hochul had a closer contest than anticipated in the 2022 election.
Republican Hopes and Democratic Challenges
Hochul’s previous election results and recent trends have energized Republican efforts to make the governor race competitive this year. They aim to link Hochul and other moderates to progressive lawmakers emerging from New York City’s primaries. Many of these new political figures are democratic socialists.
In contrast, Democrats believe Hochul’s popularity and recognition have improved. They also foresee a better national climate for Democrats, factoring in Donald Trump’s declining approval rating, economic concerns, and opposition to the Iran war.
Current Polling Figures
Hochul currently leads Blakeman by ten points in a Siena poll, which surveyed 811 likely voters from August 3-6, 2026. Hochul had 49% support compared to Blakeman’s 39%. This signifies a narrowing race from earlier polling data, where Hochul’s lead was more substantial. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
Comparison to Other Democrats
Other Democratic candidates performed better. Letitia James, running for attorney general, held an 18-point lead over Republican Saritha Komatireddy. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli maintained a 23-point lead over his Republican challenger. Hochul’s narrower lead compared to her party peers surprised political analysts but remains comfortable.
Responses from Political Experts
“A ten-point lead is still a very comfortable one and Hochul is doing better in this poll than she did in the 2022 race. It seems extremely unlikely that Hochul will lose in November,” said Boris Heersink, a political science professor.
Joseph Viteritti, a public policy expert, noted that while Blakeman is gaining momentum, Hochul retains a safe lead. Blakeman himself described the polls as inaccurate, claiming the race is evenly matched.
Other Polls and Predictions
A co/efficient poll showed Hochul with a six-point lead but also highlighted a significant percentage of undecided voters. Another poll indicated a 15-point lead in Hochul’s favor. Notably, Hochul is favored by political forecasters and prediction markets, which assign her a 94% chance of victory.

Progressive Victories and Their Impact
The Democratic primaries in New York featured wins for more progressive candidates, sparking Republican strategies to sway moderate voters statewide. However, experts doubt these wins will harm Democrats’ broader results. The midterms are less about local issues and more about national sentiment, primarily towards the Trump administration.
Shifts in New York’s Political Landscape
Recent elections have explored whether New York is shifting politically. Republicans gained ground in parts of New York City, particularly among Latino and Asian voters. Crime is frequently cited as a decisive issue, contributing to tighter Democratic margins.
Nevertheless, Democrats still hold a significant lead with voter registrations far outstripping those of Republicans in the state. Since 2002, no Republican has been elected as governor, which may provide context heading into future elections.
