Review: ‘I Love Boosters’ Offers Vibrant Cinematic Experience

Films with striking visuals are becoming rare in today’s cinema landscape. However, Boots Riley defies this trend with his latest project, “I Love Boosters.” Known for his satirical take in “Sorry to Bother You,” Riley returns with a film that challenges the typical subdued aesthetics of many contemporary movies.

“I Love Boosters” features three women, portrayed by Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie, who embark on a mission to shoplift designer clothes. The film centers around their exploits in the Bay Area targeting Metro Design stores owned by billionaire fashion designer Christie Smith, played by Demi Moore.

Riley masterfully blends live-action humor reminiscent of “Looney Tunes” with insightful social commentary. The film’s complexity may require multiple viewings to fully appreciate. Memorable moments include a demon character that consumes women’s souls through surprising methods and speeches advocating for the working class’s resistance against exploitation.

Visually, “I Love Boosters” is stunning. The sets and costumes burst with color and creativity. Tune-Yards crafts an unforgettable score, and the “Hi-Yo” leitmotif echoes long after the movie ends. Despite these strengths, certain elements fall short. Moore’s portrayal of Christie Smith lacks a heightened flair that could have complemented the film’s eccentricity. Additionally, while the final act contains amusing absurdities, it may not provoke as much laughter as intended due to the overwhelming barrage of ideas.

Although not flawless, “I Love Boosters” culminates in a refreshing positive message. Its upbeat resolution contrasts with the often somber conclusions of socially charged stories. Riley’s film takes on challenging themes in an optimistic manner.

Few films match the inventiveness of “I Love Boosters.” With his distinctive vision, Riley delivers one of the most entertaining and fast-paced experiences of the year. Overall verdict: 7/10.
