Rhiannon Giddens: Connecting Through Music and Ancestry

1 week ago 0

Rhiannon Giddens finds profound connection while playing the banjo, often sensing her ancestors’ presence. This connection fuels her journey in the music industry, linking her to the people and traditions that came before.

Giddens identifies deeply with folk music, especially the Black string band tradition, which emerged during slave times. Her work includes playing the banjo on Beyoncé’s popular song ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ and serving as the artistic director of the Silk Road Ensemble. This group, established by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, collaborates with international musicians, embracing diverse cultural sounds.

Her newest album, ‘Hope Is the Thing with Feathers,’ borrows its title from a poem by Emily Dickinson. Hope is a central theme, reflecting her ancestors’ resilience during hardships in the American South. Giddens emphasizes the importance of hope, feeling fortunate not to face the threat of starvation.

Despite her lack of faith in humanity, Giddens maintains faith in individuals. Her belief in personal connection through music and ancestry drives her artistic endeavors.
