Richard Gere on Finding True Happiness and the Influence of Buddhism

15 minutes ago 0

Richard Gere has spent many years in Hollywood, yet he strives to maintain humility. He holds the role of executive producer for the documentary “Wisdom of Happiness,” which delves into the teachings of the Dalai Lama and the quest for enduring joy. Gere, a Buddhist for over four decades, openly shares his perspective on managing fame and ego after a long career in the spotlight.

“Everyone contends with these forces,” Gere, 77, expressed to Fox News Digital. “Greed, anger, self-centeredness, impatience, jealousy—they’re all part of human nature. However, through Buddhist training, I recognize these emotions as temporary additions to the mind’s fundamental clarity.” Gere highlights that the mind has an inherent wisdom and clarity, with negative emotions being like transient clouds that pass through.

Gere does not rely on Hollywood to provide happiness. He has learned that external perks have their limitations. “True happiness and peace originate from within,” Gere explained. “We control our experiences and must remove negative habits to cultivate a better sense of well-being. Everything is changeable, and resisting change often brings discomfort.”

Beyond material success, Gere questions what is genuinely important. “Is it about what I own or who I am? External sources of happiness are fleeting,” he said, comparing temporary pleasures to the impermanence of a piece of chocolate.

Gere finds contentment away from the public eye, dividing his time between Spain and upstate New York. “Spain is my wife’s home country, and her happiness there brings me joy,” he noted. “Growing up in the Northeast, with strong family memories, deeply influences me.” Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva, his wife, share two sons. Gere’s eldest son from his previous marriage to Carey Lowell is 26.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Gere says he grew up in an “extraordinary Christian family” in Pennsylvania, where his father, Homer Gere, worked on the family farm. These values have influenced his Buddhist journey, a path he followed since his 20s to explore larger existential questions.

Gere admires farmers for their balanced view of the universe. “You can’t complain about the weather, you accept it as it is,” he stated, tying this wisdom to hard work and resilience. Gere sees a similar dedication in the Dalai Lama, who maintains a rigorous daily routine.

Gere’s interest in “Wisdom of Happiness” deepened after watching the documentary with Silva. The film became an important tribute to the Dalai Lama’s life and work, emphasizing compassion and kindness amidst global challenges.

“The start and endpoint should be basic kindness, a warm heart, and a spirit of generosity,” he said, encouraging viewers to embrace these values. “Wisdom of Happiness” is now available for digital rental or purchase.
