The Republican National Committee (RNC) is intensifying its dispute with election officials in New Jersey regarding voter roll records. The committee is threatening legal action to obtain information about noncitizens included on the state’s voter rolls.
On Wednesday, the RNC issued formal National Voter Registration Act violation notices to the New Jersey secretary of state and election officials in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties. The committee seeks records concerning noncitizen removals, citizenship verification, and voter roll maintenance activities. These officials have until September 15 to provide the requested records or potentially face litigation.
Democrat (Gov.) Mikie Sherrill admitted what the RNC already uncovered through public records requests: noncitizens are on New Jersey’s voter rolls, said RNC Chairman Joe Gruters. Now, election officials are refusing to turn over records explaining how it happened. Voters deserve answers, and the RNC is putting officials on notice: comply with the law, hand over the records, or face legal action.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill revealed that around 6,600 noncitizens were registered on the voter rolls due to a technical error in the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) system. It is reported that up to 400 of them voted.
According to the RNC, records from Bergen County showed 134 noncitizens removed from the voter rolls between January 2023 and August 2026, with 91 of these registrations linked to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Governor Sherrill’s administration reported a software error at the MVC resulted in about 6,600 improper voter registrations from June 2023 to June 2024, preceding her term.
Her administration explains that approximately 5,100 individuals affected by this error were removed due to a lack of separate registrations or attestations of eligibility. An additional 1,450 registrations were flagged for further review. Approximately 340 individuals newly registered through the error have voted, while around 220 individuals affected by the error, who voted, may have been validly registered due to previous registrations or separate confirmations.
Governor Sherrill stated that county officials are working to resolve the remaining issues before the upcoming November election. She also accused the previous Trump administration of trying to increase federal control over state voter rolls and opposed federal attempts to access nonpublic voter information, describing it as a phishing expedition in New Jersey.
The governor’s office continues its investigation into the MVC error. The RNC, the New Jersey secretary of state’s office, and Sherrill’s office did not respond immediately to requests for comments from Fox News Digital.
