Roman Guzman of Providence took a noteworthy trip to Sweden in July, participating in the Gothia Cup, the largest and most international youth soccer tournament globally. The junior defender returned with newfound insights and motivation. “It was very different,” Guzman mentioned, highlighting the stark contrasts in gameplay intensity and skill level.
The difference was apparent from the moment he arrived, having traveled 18 hours from America. “The technicality, the physical aspect, all of it was just amplified,” he said. This experience paid off in Providence’s season opener, where Guzman demonstrated his skills with a goal and an assist, contributing to a 7-0 victory over Joliet Catholic.
Jovanny Gonzalez led the team with two goals and an assist, while Billy Savarino, Christian Hofferica, Aldo Dominguez, and Chris Serrano also scored. The defensive efforts of Guzman, Luca Bullion, Cameron Klene, James Nagle, and Cooper Wojcik limited Joliet Catholic to a single shot on goal. Goalkeepers Aleksander Chavez and Caleb Pintar combined for the shutout, with Chavez making a crucial penalty save.
This match marked the 600th career win for Providence’s coach, Mike Taylor. “I don’t keep track, but Mike Stacy, who handles social media for us, pointed it out over the summer,” Taylor explained. “I was surprised. It’s been a lot of fun and the kids keep me young.”
The Celtics started strong, securing a 4-0 lead in the first half. Guzman netted the second goal of his varsity career right before halftime by converting a rebound following Leo Mendoza’s attempt that struck the post. “It’s always fun to score and celebrate with my brothers,” Guzman expressed.
Reflecting on his time in Sweden with the LA Bulls of MLS Next, Guzman remarked, “It was a really good experience. I got to lead a group I had just met and was able to be team captain.” His international experience has fueled his ambitions for larger platforms and roles.
A Joliet native, Guzman’s path could have been different; he almost attended Joliet Catholic. “I was leaning toward JCA, but my friendship with Jovanny Gonzalez played a significant role,” Guzman stated. “He’s like a brother to me.” Gonzalez, happy with Guzman’s decision, praised his dedication and growth within the team.
Now playing with renewed determination, Guzman aims to perform on bigger stages. “It just flicked a switch in me,” he said about his Sweden trip. “It was such a blessing.”
