Russia launched an overnight assault on Ukraine, targeting major cities with numerous drones and missiles. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and officials, the attack resulted in 11 fatalities and damage to a historic religious landmark. The offensive struck Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv, the second-largest city.
Diplomatic Efforts and International Response
The attacks followed separate conversations between Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. President Donald Trump. This indicates ongoing diplomatic efforts by the U.S. to resolve the conflict that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Discussions on the Ukraine war will also occur during a G7 summit in France, where both Zelenskyy and Trump will be present.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a decisive response from G7 countries. He urged increased pressure on Russia and more support for Ukraine’s air defense systems, particularly against ballistic missiles.
Casualties and Damage in Kyiv
The attack on Kyiv resulted in five deaths and injured at least 30 people, including two children. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported these casualties, while military official Tymur Tkachenko noted the strikes’ impact. Ballistic missiles and Shahed drones caused several explosions throughout the city, forcing residents to seek shelter. The Shevchenkivskyi district experienced significant destruction, with homes, a market, and a grocery store set ablaze.
Targeted Sites and Russian Statements
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated the strikes aimed at defense and industrial locations in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Targeted areas included facilities producing drones and missiles. The Ministry mentioned that Kyiv’s Radar plant and Mayak plant were among those hit. Other targets included military conscription offices.
Religious Landmark Damaged
Smoke enveloped the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a historical religious site, as its roof caught fire during the attack. Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, condemned the strike as a crime against humanity and history. This complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site, revered for its monasteries and churches connected by extensive subterranean passages.
Zelenskyy and government officials visited the damaged site. He called the attack on the religious landmark Russia’s most severe offense against Christian culture.
International Reaction
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot likened the attack to a bombing of Paris’s Notre Dame. Ukraine’s UNESCO National Commission urged global efforts to pressure Russia to halt its invasion, describing the damage as detrimental to all humanity’s cultural heritage. Russia claimed, without evidence, that a Ukrainian Patriot missile caused some of the destruction.
Extent of Russia’s Offensive
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 70 missiles and over 600 drones, mainly focusing on Kyiv and also impacting Dnipro and Kharkiv. Air defenses managed to intercept or disrupt most of these targets. Preliminary reports indicate that 20 ballistic missiles and 27 drones struck multiple locations.
Russia claimed to have downed 123 Ukrainian drones overnight. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
