The San Francisco 49ers began their season impressively by defeating their division rival, the Los Angeles Rams, 27-7. The game took place in Melbourne, Australia, as part of the NFL International Series.

Both teams undertook the lengthy journey to Melbourne, which can extend up to 16 hours from Los Angeles. The 49ers arrived nearly a week before the game, while the Rams arrived just over a day prior to kickoff. Some have speculated whether this late arrival affected the Rams’ performance, especially given that they were considered strong contenders for the Super Bowl this season.

During his postgame comments, 49ers’ new wide receiver Mike Evans expressed surprise at the Rams’ travel schedule. Evans humorously questioned, “When did they get out here?” Upon learning the Rams had arrived 25 hours earlier, he remarked on the importance of allowing time for the body to adjust. “Obviously, whenever the game’s scheduled, you gotta be ready to play, but maybe a few days earlier would’ve been ideal,” Evans stated. Despite this, he emphasized the 49ers’ focus was on their own performance.

Evans joined the 49ers this offseason, bringing his talent from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to enhance their receiving options. Both Evans and quarterback Brock Purdy played crucial roles in securing the victory. Purdy threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns, with Evans marking one of those touchdowns and finishing with six receptions for 49 yards. Demarcus Robinson contributed 50 yards and a touchdown, while Deebo Samuel added another touchdown along with 48 yards.

Conversely, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford faced difficulties, achieving 15 of 25 completions for 155 yards, with one interception and no touchdowns. The Rams managed only 290 offensive yards, with running back Kyren Williams scoring their sole touchdown.

Some observers suggested the Rams suffered from jet lag. Nonetheless, Rams head coach Sean McVay stood by their travel choices, asserting it did not influence their subpar game.
