The San Francisco Giants celebrated a significant moment at Oracle Park, retiring Jeff Kent’s No. 21 jersey. Kent, recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, stood in the spotlight during the ceremony. Yet, one particular interaction with his former teammate Barry Bonds captured attention, reflecting their complicated yet successful partnership.
Kent and Bonds achieved considerable success together in San Francisco. Their tenure is remembered for outstanding performances and a notable altercation during a 2002 game in San Diego. Bonds famously shoved Kent before teammates intervened. On Saturday, the two playfully revisited that moment while celebrating Kent’s jersey retirement.
During the ceremony, Kent addressed the fans, highlighting his relationship with Bonds. “I’ve said it many times,” Kent remarked before the Giants’ 7-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. “He and I have never gone out to dinner, but I’ll go to war with that guy any day of the week. If Bonds and I weren’t fighting in the dugout, we wouldn’t have what we’ve got.” Kent acknowledged the intensity they shared, underscoring how it contributed to their achievements.
Kent also sent a message to Bonds, expressing optimism about Bonds’ Baseball Hall of Fame prospects. “Barry, keep with it, brother, you got a shot,” Kent stated. He reflected on his time with Bonds, praising his exceptional playing ability. “I’m grateful that I got to play with a phenomenal player,” Kent shared with reporters.
Bonds holds the record for most home runs in MLB history with 762. He earned 14 All-Star selections and was named National League MVP seven times. Despite these accolades, Bonds faces challenges in securing Hall of Fame induction, largely due to his connection with performance-enhancing drugs.
In 2024, Bonds expressed contentment with his legacy while being inducted into the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame. He conveyed a shift in focus, prioritizing family over Hall of Fame aspirations. “I don’t have to worry about those things no more in my life,” Bonds said. “I want to hang around my grandchildren and my children.” Bonds’ No. 25 was retired by the Giants in 2018, honoring his enduring impact on the team.
