Sarah Trone Garriott, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, is working to clarify her stance on sensitive issues, including the contentious topic of men accessing women’s locker rooms. She asserts that her opponents are distorting her position.

I’m a mom with two kids in Iowa public schools. Their education and safety are my top concerns. It distresses me when my opponent misrepresents my record, so I must address it clearly, Trone Garriott stated in a campaign video.

Trone Garriott’s voting record complicates her campaign narrative as she attempts to unseat incumbent Rep. Zach Nunn, a Republican. Throughout her tenure in the Iowa legislature, her votes have conflicted with her current assertions, drawing attention from Republicans seeking to exploit this discrepancy.

One prominent critique from Republicans includes Vice President J.D. Vance highlighting her votes on issues like gender policy for bathrooms and sports. Trone Garriott voted against legislation that required school bathrooms to correspond with individuals’ biological sex and set sports eligibility rules based on biological sex.

These votes contrast with her campaign rhetoric, raising questions about whether her positions have shifted. Trone Garriott expressed concerns about restrictive policies promoting racial and gender tensions, stating during an address with the United Methodist Church:

It’s challenging the notion of the powerful white male figure by introducing complexity and confusion, she remarked.

The Trone Garriott campaign did not explain the dissonance between her previous votes and current campaign statements. However, a spokesperson reaffirmed her stance:

Sarah does not advocate for men in women’s locker rooms. As a parent, her priority is the safety of children. She supports parents’ rights to determine what’s best for their kids, Zach Schenkman stated.

Her campaign video emphasized too much political focus on these topics, assuming an extreme position.

Politicians are excessively intense regarding these matters. I prioritize families and children, Trone Garriott asserted.
